Brushless DC Motors

Brushless DC motors are also called electronically commutated (EC) motors. They require zero maintenance, provide long life, and quiet operation. BLDC motors produce more output power per frame size compared to similar-sized AC or permanent magnet DC motors and gearmotors. They are sometimes described as “inside-out permanent magnet motors” because their magnets are attached to the rotor and their windings are part of the stationery motor housing. Locating the windings, which generate heat, closer to the outside of the motor allows these motors handle higher continuous loads without exceeding the motor temperature limit. Low rotor inertia improves acceleration and deceleration times while shortening operating cycles, and their linear speed/torque characteristics produce predictable speed regulation. Because these motors have no brushes, they are virtually maintenance-free, they do not generate brush dust, and they are quieter than comparable brush-type motors. They are ideal for applications where servicing the motor is difficult or not desired. Bodine brushless DC motors are available with both 24VDC and 130VDC windings. Low-voltage models are frequently used in battery-operated or solar powered portable equipment, or medical applications where shock hazards cannot be tolerated. 

Brushless DC motors are well suited for applications that require tight speed regulation, high speeds (we offer stock models up to 10K RPM), or where a brush-type DC motor would generate too much noise and wear out the brushes too quickly. Examples include centrifuges, lens grinders and cooling fans in commercial cooking equipment.
