Bodine Electric Qualifies New Speed Control for Brushless DC Motors

A.C.E. model PML703-5-HL60 (left) serves as a strong replacement for the discontinued Bodine model 3911 (right), offering comparable form, fit, and function.

After a comprehensive evaluation by our engineering team, Bodine Electric is pleased to recommend the American Control Electronics (A.C.E.) model PML703-5-HL60 as an alternative speed control for our standard 130-volt brushless DC motors and gearmotors. This recommendation comes as a response to the discontinuation of the Bodine model 3911.

A.C.E., based in South Beloit, Illinois, specializes in electronic controls for a variety of motor applications. The PML703-5-HL60 was selected for its close resemblance to the Bodine model 3911 in terms of form, fit, and function. As illustrated in the image above, the A.C.E. control fits seamlessly into spaces designed for the Bodine model 3911, with only minor differences in mounting hole locations.

Engineering Validation

Beyond matching physical dimensions and nameplate ratings, our engineers conducted rigorous testing to ensure compatibility and performance. Using a dynamometer, they evaluated all of Bodine’s standard 130-volt 2500 RPM brushless DC motors at their rated torque. The motors tested (types 22B2, 22B3, 22B4, 34B3, 34B4, and 34B6) operated within their specified temperature limits and performed as expected under continuous load conditions.

Wiring and Connections

Proper wiring is critical when pairing Bodine motors with the A.C.E. model PML703-5-HL60. Bodine’s stock 130 VDC brushless DC motors are equipped with a plug-and-twist connector, as shown in the image at the right, that mates with Bodine’s model 3983 wire harness (shown below right). To connect the model 3983 harness to the A.C.E. control, the terminations on the opposite end of the harness must be removed. Once removed, the individual wires can be connected to the A.C.E. terminal blocks as shown in the table below:

Motor WireControl Terminal Block Location
18 AWG – BrownU / A2
18 AWG – RedV / A1
18 AWG – OrangeW
18 AWG – Green/YellowN/A (ground)
24 AWG – Bare (drain)COM
24 AWG – BlackCOM
24 AWG – GreenHB
24 AWG – WhiteHC
24 AWG – BrownHA
24 AWG – Red+5V
